Chapter 85
- *Isabel*
- I made my way to the changing room, desperate to head back to the pack house after a long day of work. I stuffed my hairnet and apron into the cramped space of my locker, twisting the lock into place. I picked up the small bag I came to work with, slinging the strap over my shoulder. Cora bounded into the changing room just as I was about to leave. Julia had given her some extra tasks as punishment for arriving late to work that morning. She ran her gaze over my clothes, realizing I'd already checked out. I knew she wouldn't mind that I hadn't planned on waiting for her. She seemed to understand that I was going through a rough phase. “Leaving already?” She asked softly, her warm smile as constant as ever.
- I nodded, mustering up a faint smile in return. How could I not? “Yeah." I sighed. We stepped aside as one of the kitchen volunteers almost barreled into us. She murmured her apologies, her voice tinged with tiredness. I met Cora's gaze, giving her a knowing look. "Long day," I pointed out. She nodded, staring after volunteer. We both watched as she lowered herself lazily onto the bench. I twisted my lips, sympathizing with her. She'd come to work around the same time Cora had, so she'd also had to work extra hours. It was bad enough that the orphanage had been bustling with activity. I couldn't imagine having to stay back to do some extra work.
