• Eliza returned to her usual, cheery expression when she saw that Cody had pressed his lips together and remained silent. “I can’t possibly guess what’s going on in that complicated mind of yours, Mr. Brooks.” She tilted her head sideways like a cheeky little kid. “If I actually got the answer right, that would probably mean that I could read minds, huh?”
• “Pfft.” He pinched the tip of her nose affectionately, and she responded with a silly face. Cody looked into her eyes as he swiftly wrapped an arm around her waist. He reached his other arm out and pointed toward the sky before Eliza could even make sense of what was going on.
• Everything else ceased to matter at that moment, as Eliza was utterly blown away by the sky full of twinkling stars above her head. She couldn’t recall the last time she had seen so many stars in the night sky—every one of them was extremely bright. She immediately shrieked with joy like a young child. She then turned to tug on Cody’s arm. “Look, Mr. Brooks; isn’t that Venus? It’s so bright.”
