Chapter 33 Are You Crazy, Mr Brooks?

• Eliza’s palms were sweating as she held her phone tightly. “We’ve broken up, Mr. Brooks. Why are you looking for me at this time of the night?” She tried her best to sound casual.
• “Don’t make me ask you twice, Eliza. Come down now.” Cody’s words were practically an order. Being his usual, domineering self, he ended the call immediately after that. Eliza felt her heart pounding as her breath grew shallow. She knew that Cody wasn’t joking; she was afraid to even think of how he had found out about her house there. She acted without any hesitation, which was a natural response to the situation after she had been suppressed by his orders for the past five years.
• With her slippers on, she threw a coat over herself, ignoring the fact that she was dressed in her pajamas underneath. She caught a glimpse of her own reflection on the full-length mirror on her way out of the apartment. Her skin was pale and drained of all color; there was no hint of the beauty that she once had. Eliza’s footsteps came to a halt right then, and she turned back into her room before carefully picking out a long dress. She then applied some lipstick and put on a pair of high heels before she went down; this was the final shred of dignity that she had to maintain for herself in front of Cody.
