Chapter 109 I’ll Let You Go Only When I’m Dead

  • The familiar combination of tobacco and ocean-scented aftershave penetrated the air around Eliza. She dug her slender fingers into the surface of her wooden door as she felt her palms sweating. She knew that the way that Cody acted then was the reason she felt so pressured—he merely glared at her without uttering a single word. His pupils looked like they had been soaked in black ink, and his eyes felt like never-ending blackholes that could suck her in and consume her wholly. She lost all her strength to go against him then.
  • “What’s so great about your life now?” Cody finally broke the silence.
  • “What’s so bad about it, Mr. Brooks?” Her voice still sounded as slurred and relaxed as ever. She refused to give in to the stubborn and unrelenting man before her eyes; she would put on a show even when she was in a situation where she had to plead for mercy, let alone a situation like this. “Mr. Brooks.” Eliza’s voice reverberated within the walls of the corridor as she put on a faint smile. “Shouldn’t you be happy if I get married to someone? You wouldn’t have to worry about me in the future then.” Her crisp, clear voice went on as she eyed him playfully. “Benjamin’s great. I wouldn’t want to exaggerate anything, but I can say that at least 90% of women in the country find him attractive. I’ve met his parents—they’re funny and friendly people who really like me. Obviously, everyone is clearly happy in this case.”
