Chapter 4 A Woman’s Heart Was the Most Venomous

  • Eliza was Cody’s kept woman.
  • When he saw her for the first time, the defiant and rebellious look in her bright, kittenish eyes made him feel a sudden urge to break her wings.
  • It was a kind of inexplicable urge that stemmed from a man’s desire to conquer a woman.
  • Cody thought his desire for her was something that happened on the spur of the moment, but this so-called ‘moment’ had lasted as long as five years. At least he didn’t get bored with both Eliza’s body and Eliza herself.
  • Eliza knew her place very well too. She knew very well how to behave in all kinds of situations, including what to do and what not to do.
  • Therefore, she became the only woman whom he kept by his side for the longest time.
  • However, this didn’t mean that Cody would allow her to put on shows of bad temper and sound him out unconditionally.
  • Have I been too indulgent toward this woman lately? he thought to himself.
  • Cody’s eyes darkened before he said coldly, “Get out of the car.”
  • Eliza was left alone at the spot.
  • Standing in this desolate place, she curled her lips while worrying about being taken for a ghost because of the bright red gown she was wearing.
  • Unfortunately, it started raining, as if resonating with how she was feeling. The continuous patter of rain made Eliza sneeze right away, and she felt increasingly cold.
  • “Tsk, tsk. What a poor abandoned kitten.” A bantering voice rang as a red sports car stopped in front of her. “Do you want me to give you a ride, my rumored girlfriend?”
  • It was Benjamin.
  • Eliza glanced at him. Then, she pulled the car door open and got into his car with simple and brisk movements without any affectations.
  • “Head to the hospital.”
  • Benjamin looked her up and down suspiciously. “Have you suffered from domestic abuse?”
  • Eliza put on a forced smile. “Yeah, I’m going there to have my injuries examined and let the paparazzi follow me. Tomorrow’s headlines will be about your domestic abuse of me, Mr. Gardner.”
  • “A woman’s heart is the most venomous,” cursed Benjamin in a whisper.
  • Still, his red sports car headed for the best private hospital in Lake City.
  • To prevent the paparazzi from actually catching up with Eliza, Benjamin drove off after sending her to the hospital, leading the reporters who had been following them on a wild goose chase.
  • Eliza walked inside alone.
  • She was wearing a face mask; coupled with the fact it was late at night, no one guessed that the person in front of them was Eliza Walker, the celebrity.
  • “How long has your period stopped coming?”
  • “A week.”
  • “Let’s take a blood sample and do a urine test.”
  • “Okay.”
  • Ten minutes later, Eliza had done all the tests and was waiting quietly for the final results of her blood test.
  • She had the results of her urine test in her hand. As she read the report’s conclusion, her expression suddenly softened, and she drew a circle on the report with her finger without her realizing it.
  • Suddenly, the vibration of her cell phone interrupted her thoughts.
  • Eliza’s expression changed at the sight of the caller’s ID. The instant she picked up the phone, a nervous voice cried out from the other end of the line, “Eliza, can you please come back quickly? Dad is so scary…”
  • It was Elaine Walker.
  • Eliza comforted Elaine while quickly walking out of the hospital. Then, she hailed a taxi to an old downtown neighborhood right away.
  • When Eliza came in, she saw John Walker forcing Elaine to give money to him. He said, “I have taken care of you and your sister for such a long time; now that your sister has become a celebrity, she must have given you a lot of money. Give me the money, or I’ll kill you!”
  • His ferocious expression made him look like a local hoodlum asking for money instead of a father.
  • Elaine was trembling like a leaf while hiding in a corner out of fright. Upon seeing Eliza, she cried aloud right away, “Eliza…”
