Chapter 231 Not A Threat

  • Adriano did not sleep that night, again. He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, his jaw tense, his thoughts dragging him back to the same image of Serena's face. Those wide, frightened eyes when he confronted her. The subtle tremor in her voice when she denied what he had already seen with his own eyes.
  • He wanted to believe her. God, he wanted to believe her so badly it almost hurt. But experience had carved that kind of naivety out of him years ago. He knew better than to trust anything she said ever again. The thought of her stayed with him, circling in his mind until exhaustion finally won, and he drifted off to sleep sometime before dawn.
  • His sleep was shallow and restless, and when the first light of morning crept in through the curtains, he was up. He would be meeting Trejo today. Not to ask her why or to confront her-none of that. He was going to declare war. In person. She had used Serena as an informant, which crossed every possible line. That was war.
