• When Adriano stepped into the bedroom, the lights were off, and the only illumination came from the faint moonlight slipping through the curtains. Even with the darkness, his gaze found Serena. She was curled tightly at one end of the bed, her form stiff and unmoving beneath the covers. She did not flinch, not even when he intentionally slammed the door shut behind him.
• He glanced at his wristwatch. It was a few minutes past eleven. She was either asleep or doing a damn good job pretending to be. He said nothing, just exhaled quietly through his nose and moved toward the bathroom.
• He took a quick cold shower, then threw on soft pajama pants and a plain white tee, his hair still damp as he returned to the room. He climbed into bed and lay flat on his back, staring up at the ceiling. He still did not feel relaxed; every muscle in his body was wound tightly.
