Her back ached from the stiff hospital couch she had spent the night on, and her neck protested as she turned toward the door.
• The muffled commotion outside became clearer now; someone was arguing with the men Adriano had stationed at the entrance of Rita's hospital room. Anna groaned and pushed herself to her feet, crossing the room and opening the door. Her eyes widened when she saw Martin standing there, a large bouquet of flowers in hand and frustration etched on his face as he pointed toward her almost as soon as she tugged the door open.
