• Serena stepped into the lot, her shoes clicking softly against the pavement as she approached the black SUV. She hugged herself tightly as she felt a shiver run down her spine, and the shiver had nothing to do with the weather because it was a warm afternoon. When she reached the vehicle, Mike stepped out and opened the door for her.
• "Good afternoon, ma'am," he muttered, wearing a bright smile.
• "Hey, Mike," she responded, her voice laced with exhaustion as she slid into the back seat. Then she muttered a quiet "thank you" and pulled the seatbelt across her chest as Mike shut the door and settled behind the wheel; their eyes met in the rearview mirror.
