• The flight back to New Orleans was mostly uneventful. Serena slept through most of it, her head resting lightly against the window and a thin blanket pulled over her lap. On the few occasions she stirred, her gaze flicked toward Adriano. He was either hunched over his phone or speaking in hushed tones to someone on the other end.
• The version of him from the day before-the one who smiled at the kids warmly and who seemed so vulnerable and at home at the shelter-was gone. In his place was the cold, unreadable mafia don again. His icy mask was firmly back on.
