Chapter 53

• Elizabeth paced around her room, her mind racing as she contemplated how to escape the predicament she had found herself in. She considered running away and dashed to the window, but fear gripped her as she looked down and realized how high up she was. Worse, there were people outside who worked for her father, and they wouldn’t hesitate to stop her if they caught her. She sighed deeply and threw herself onto the bed, trying to hold back her tears. Her father had informed her earlier that they would be meeting the man she was to marry that day, and she wasn’t ready for it.
• Soon, there was a knock on her door.
• We are leaving in a few minutes. Are you prepared? Mr. Michaelson asked. Elizabeth remained silent, her anger towards her father palpable.
