  • The car stopped gently on the west side of the beach. Thomas got out first, then Cynthia, who quickly opened the side door. Slowly, Ken was lifted out and placed into his wheelchair.
  • The moment the cool breeze touched his face, he lifted his head and took in a deep breath. The air carried the strong smell of salt and fresh seawater. It went deep into his chest and stirred something inside him he couldn't explain.
  • He closed his eyes for a moment. The sound of the waves rolling onto the shore, the cry of seabirds above, the rush of the wind, it all felt new, yet somehow familiar.
