Chapter 70

  • The dining hall looked beautiful that evening. The table was set perfectly—with shiny gold-rimmed plates, nice silverware, and neatly folded napkins. The smell of roasted duck, creamy garlic sauce, and fresh rolls filled the air.
  • Cynthia pushed Ken into the room slowly, her hand steady on his chair. He looked around at the long table, which already had some people seated. Mr. Sydney sat at the head of the table, looking serious but calm. Mrs. Sydney was next to him, smiling warmly, looking as composed as ever. Jack was lounging a few seats down, swirling his wine and appearing a bit bored. Across from them sat Cynthia's mother and younger sister, dressed neatly, while her father wasn't there because of work commitments.
  • Cynthia helped Ken settle in by his dad and took a seat beside him.
