Chapter 100

• Jack sat at the far end of the hospital diner, wearing a black cap pulled low to hide his face. From his spot, he could see Cynthia and Dr. John talking quietly across the room. Although their voices didn't reach him, he could read their expressions. Cynthia looked tired but was listening closely to every word the doctor said.
• He didn't want to watch any longer. He had things to do so he slipped out of the diner and walked to the main hospital lobby. The large, sterile space was dim under the night lights, with most of the nurses quietly doing their duties. And there it was, the window to Lilian's ward. He looked up at the four-story hospital building. He had to hurry. He couldn't afford to be seen.
• Using the elevator he stopped at the hallway and approached her door. The ward was quiet. Slowly, he turned the handle. The faint creak that followed made his heart jump, but he pushed the door open a little more.
