• ​Lily had found a way to sneak into Elara's cold cell, her body tense as she fell to her knees crying. Elara was sitting on the small bed, her face buried in her knees, a statue of silent agony. The stone walls seemed to weep with her, the dampness of the dungeon chilling the air to a bone-deep frost.
• ​“I caused this… I didn’t protect you enough,” Lily cried out, her voice echoing off the curved ceiling. According to what she had overheard from the doctors and Angelo’s frantic discussion, Elara had ingested something…a toxin or a drug…which had triggered the violent miscarriage.
• ​“I was the one serving you… I made a mistake. Please punish me,” Lily continued, her heart breaking at the lack of response. She tried to speak, to beg, to reach out and touch Elara’s trembling shoulder, but the girl remained lifeless. It was as if the soul had been ripped out of her body along with her child.
