- Odessa returned to her hut after the day's work. The sun had set, and she had intended to sneak out when the guards and masters would be busy with the other slaves.
- She hadn't seen Lyra since morning, and she prayed she wouldn't even set eyes on her ever again. She squatted beside her bed, shoving the clothes one after the other, until she got the one that would conceal her body entirely.
