  • My eyelids fluttered open to a harsh white light that stung my vision. The world was a blur of sterile walls and humming machines. As consciousness settled in my bones, my chest felt heavy, as though the air in this room was thicker than anywhere I had ever been.
  • I tried to lift my head, but a throb behind my temple pressed me back against the pillow. A slow, steady beep marked time beside me, and I realized I was hooked to a machine, a thin plastic tube tracing from my arm to an IV bag swaying just out of reach. My other wrist was cuffed to the bed’s metal rail, the cold steel biting into my skin.
