- I stepped into the doctor’s office, the door closing with a soft click behind me. The room smelled of lavender and disinfectant. Charts lined the walls, diagrams of hearts and lungs, lists of herbs and dosages. A single candle flickered beside a low shelf of jars.
- “Lady Maya,” the doctor said, rising from his seat behind a polished wooden desk. He was a lean man, hair streaked with gray, eyes warm but tired. He gestured to a chair.
