Chapter 33

• The family gathered for dinner at the dining table while I waited in the room assigned to me. I took my phone and called mum, informing her that I had officially started my work. I told her about the ridiculous house rules that I had been given. “You are yet to see more, my child” she said in a sad tone. I decided to change the subject and told her that I had met Ray and he seemed to be coping better than the last time they had met. She didn’t want to speak much, thus I had to go. I sent my regards to Anita and Greg and wished mum good night.
• Mama Boi called me to the sitting room. I had already removed my blazer. I wore it quickly and joined the family. I was told to clear the table and get back to the living room. I took the dishes to the kitchen and joined them in the living room. She introduced her family to me as baba boi, Jimmy (boi), Cate and Caro. I told them my name, Stephanie, and the woman of the house continued to talk. She reminded me of the rules of her house. Finally, I was asked if I had any question. I asked whether I was entitled to off days and was told that I would be free on Sunday. With that, I requested to be allowed to wear clothes of my choice on my day off and I was granted the permission. The final thing I asked, which wasn’t necessarily a question was why they called Jimmy boi, yet he is a grown man. Cate responded and said that she too, had the same question in her mind. Cate was the second born in the family. The look they gave me was proof enough that my question was not in the context of what they wanted. I smiled at Cate and said that I did not have any more question.
