Chapter 39

  • Anita told us about her progress in school. She talked about her teachers and friends. She talked about groups of girls who had classified themselves as classy. She had been told to join but she declined. She wanted
  • to stand out and make her life the way she wanted, without being subjected to peer pressure. I encouraged her to always make her own decisions and focus on her life. She talked about different subjects and how she was finding them. She said how physics was difficult. Ray joined in and encouraged her to work harder on it, telling her that he taught me the subject. She also had joined different extra curriculum activities. She was a member of peer counselors and St. John’s ambulance. She truly was making steps in her life since she had always wanted to venture in the medical field.
  • My phone rang. It was mum calling. She had arrived and wanted to know where we had sat. I volunteered to go meet her and Ray said he would walk with me. “Don’t you see how these men are looking at you? I don’t want them to start talking to you” he said jealously and laughed then joined me as we walked to meet mum. He held my waist as we walked. We could see people looking at us, especially the school girls. We met mum and I hugged her passionately. “You are looking good, Steph” she said. The last time she had seen me was when I was pale and sad from the victimization of Greg and the loss of my baby. “I can see who have managed to overcome your sorrows” she said. She greeted Ray too and said he too was doing well. Ray took her luggage and we started walking. I led the way, but Ray kept at pace with me, placing his hand on my shoulder as we walked.
