Chapter 53

• Mary, Ray’s sister was working as the manager since she had left her abusive marriage. She had come to learn how much potential she had. She was now making use of her untapped energy and making a living for her and her children. She narrated to me how she had spent her life in fear and abuse from her then husband. When I first met her, she was wearing a floor length dress which was long sleeved. It looked stylish and beautiful on her. Little did I know that she was always concealing the different marks she had been getting from the endless beatings from her husband. Her face was always covered in heavy make- up so that no one would see the marks on her face. We all thought that she was taking good care of her outlook but she was hiding her face.
• It was for this reason that she had asked Ray why he was dating me when I was still very young. She had imagined that I was defenseless in his presence and thus was not with him out of my own free will. She couldn’t imagine that her brother would also be a beast like her husband.
• Mum was very proud of me. She was mostly proud of how fast I had grown my small tailoring shop to a huge fashion house that would have a cliental from all walks of life. I had formed great partnerships with different modelling agencies and my fashion house would always be called to design different outfits for different occasions. We had also formed partnership with different corporate bodies to have us make their uniforms. I had achieved all this by the help of Mary who was using her great managerial skills. I had everything to be thankful for.
