Chapter 47

• The number of clients increased. I could no longer work alone in my shop. I started out sourcing other tailors to help me work. I started with two tailors. I taught them about the trendy wears and checked on their work, until I was satisfied with what they were doing. Ray too had been meeting a larger number of youths. On many occasions, he invited me to his mentorship programs where we could combine efforts and mentor the teenagers. He believed that I could be a good mentor to the youth. It was just like Jimmy and my high school colleagues who saw something in me that I never saw in myself.
• Three months had passed and I had not conceived. I started getting stressed. Ray could see the disappointment in me each time I tested for pregnancy and the results came out negative. He would encourage me, saying that kids would come at God’s own time. “God’s time?” I asked.
• Where was God when I lost my first pregnancy? Where was He when I was mocked and accused of aborting the pregnancy? Where was He when I lost the second one? Why did He allow me to conceive then take the babies away from me? Where was He when we tried to get pregnant? Why did He choose to cause us pain? I would ask myself.
