Chapter 24

• Mr. Komen called me the next day. It was our prayers day. He told me that I had been stupid for refusing him and accepting to be with Ray. “Have you seen any of my girlfriends getting pregnant anyhow?” he asked. I didn’t want to argue with him. I decided to leave him standing and join my schoolmates in the chapel. The Sunday service would start later than other Sundays as we waited for the parents to come. There were songs of praise being sung by the school Christian Union. I sat at the back. I was feeling ashamed since everyone knew what had happened to me.
• Parents started coming. I was expecting Ray and mum. Mum came in with the principal. She looked sad. She felt embarrassed by what I had done. The most embarrassing part was that Ray had said that he slept with me in the school compound. She came to where I was and hugged me. She told me that everything works for good. More parents came in and their children ushered them in to the designated parents’ seats. I could see them talking in whispers. Maybe they said that the supposed role model had been impregnated by her teacher.
• When a substantial number of parents had come in, the service started. We started by different groups singings songs of praise. I was the chairlady of the Young Christian Society in the school. I felt like I had failed every one. When our turn came, I did not go up stage to sing. I sat and watched them sing and dance to my favorite song. How I wished I was there.
