• It had been a week since I escaped to the Shadow Pack, and for the first time in what felt like ages, I was actually starting to feel like myself again. The oppressive weight of Zeus's rule had been lifted, and Hades's protection brought me peace I hadn't known was possible. My strength returned, my appetite increased, and I spent the days helping the other pack members with various little tasks, fitting myself into the rhythm of life here.
• I began to appreciate silence and talking with members of Hades's pack, learning their lifestyle and so much more— all so different from everything I knew but sort of comfortable. They were welcoming them not out of fear but for respect and goodness. Such was the world I would want my child to grow in: hope and warmth.
