Chapter 187

  • Kavian’s POV
  • I could see the disappointment, the frustration, and the thin edge of fear etched across Draco’s face—and mirrored in the soldiers with him—as they returned to the pack house. Their shoulders were stiff, steps measured, as if each pace carried the weight of what awaited them. I was certain Draco was already dreading the moment he would have to stand before my father and explain his failure.
  • Still, no matter how ruthless and wicked my father could be, I doubted he would punish Draco as severely as he had punished Lord Darian for his first failed mission. If he killed every man who stumbled, he would soon have no men left at all. Draco would face harsh words, perhaps discipline meant to sting and remind him of his place—but nothing fatal. In fact, I was certain my father would still leave him with the assignment to end the rebellion and bring back the rebel leader’s head. He always did. He granted chances—never too many, but enough. I knew him that well.
