- I slipped through Rose’s window like a shadow, landing softly on the wooden floorboards of her room. The scent of her lingered faintly in the space—wildflowers and warm sunlight—but she wasn’t here yet. I straightened, my ears pricked for any footsteps outside. Technically, I had no reason to sneak in anymore. Her father had made it clear I was welcome in their home, her aunt smiled at me like I belonged, and even the pack members seemed to also adore me.
- But I wasn’t built for warmth and welcomes. Crowds pressed in on me like walls closing, conversations grated against my nerves like static. I’d rather melt into the dark and find her on my own terms. So even tonight, with the entire pack celebrating below, I found myself crouched in the quiet of her room, the window still cracked open behind me, letting in the sound of laughter and music from the courtyard below.
