• I stood by the bed, a few feet away from him. He ran his fingers through his hair for the hundredth time.
• “How are your feet?” he asked. The pain was nothing compared to what was going on inside my heart. I had forgotten about it, to tell the truth.
• “Don’t make small talk please,” I said, trying to sound cold but I am sure, my red eyes and trembling voice gave me away. Even so, he nodded and proceeded with his speech.
