Chapter 19 His Words - Part l

  • Consciousness slowly pulled into me as I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar room. I knew I was in the little cottage near the packhouse owing to the bareness of the room and the peculiar green colour of the walls. It was much closer to Vesna's garden than the room I currently reside in. I close my eyes and rub my temples. My ears are ringing, and I'm suffering from a migraine-like throbbing pain.
  • I take a few long breaths and open my eyes again. I look out the window at the darkening sky. I grumble in frustration to myself. It's already dark outside! I slept the entire day through! I vaguely recall the sun being at the top of my head; it had to be midday when I fainted. I sigh. To make up for today, I'll need to put in twice as much effort tomorrow. I feel horrible for Vesna. She's already found me unconscious a few times, and I passed out in front of her today! My throat felt like a parched desert, and I noticed a glass of water on the bedside table. I reached for the drink slowly, and just lifting my arm wrenched my sore muscles. My suffering was cut short as a person entered. As that fading enticing scent hit my nostrils, my stomach did a backflip. As I strained to recognise the form in the dark, they proceeded towards the side table. They scooped up the glass and lit the lamp on the side table. A surge of disappointment washed over me as the warm light lit Vesna's delicate features. What was I expecting? Stupid, stupid heart!
  • Vesna helped me in getting up and adjust a pillow behind me to lean on. My parched throat was soothed as I took a few gulps of the cold water. Closing my eyes, I sighed with relief and stretched my hand to place the glass back. She drew a chair and sat next to me.
