Chapter 10
- "How did you convince Mr. Revelar?" my father asked over the phone. His voice carried that mixture of curiosity and concern that always made my chest tighten. Even though I had spoken to him countless times before, this conversation felt weightier, like the world was watching silently through the line.
- I just took a deep breath and then fixed my peplum dress. "I told you, Dad. I only offered to be his assistant from time to time," I lied. My fingers trembled slightly as I smoothed the fabric, hoping he wouldn’t notice the faint shaking. I forced a lightness into my voice, sprinkling casualness over the tension I felt inside.
- He did not immediately reply on the other line. I know he doesn't buy my excuse, but I just prayed that he wouldn't try to find out the truth. I imagined his furrowed brow, his skeptical eyes, and tried to picture a world where he accepted my answer without probing further. Later, I heard him sigh. The sound carried a mixture of resignation and worry that sank deep into my chest.
