Chapter 135

  • **Gabe’s POV**
  • I stood at the edge of the ancient bridge, dark mists around us, as my heart pounded against my ribcage. I looked down into the thick mist swirling around the chasm below. There was nothing but darkness under the bridge. The bridge stretched out in front of us, its wooden planks worn and creaky, with gaps where some had fallen away, leaving dangerous spaces. It disappeared into the fog, and I couldn’t see what lay ahead, despite my werewolf sight. Is this what it was like for humans at night? Evelina could probably see even less than I could. This was dangerous, more so for her than me. Every instinct within me was warning me to back away, to take Evelina and hide her until the storm had passed. But I knew we had to cross. We could not hide away. We had to overcome the trial and win this war. Our people might be holding their own for now against the dark coven, but for how long? Last I had spoken to them, Kyle had conveyed to me that Coven Head Melanie had managed a stasis spell to contain the demon for now.
  • Evelina’s hand tightened around mine, her warmth grounding me. I could feel the tension in her, but when she looked at me, I saw the same determination I felt inside myself. We were in this together.
