- Her eyes fall to the table, as if my words have landed exactly where she already knew they would. There’s no denial left in her, no spark of defence, just quiet resignation. I turn back to the stove and finish cooking, the soft hiss of the pan the only sound between us. When the food is ready, I slide a plate in front of her and take the seat opposite.
- She doesn’t touch it. She just stares, lost somewhere I can’t reach.
