• She stays quiet beside me, her gaze fixed out the passenger window as I drive. The silence feels heavy, too heavy for the short distance between us. I can’t make sense of it, why would Killian send her to me? Yes, we’ve done business together, but that doesn’t mean I owe him anything.
• It was always obvious she was more than just a stepdaughter to him. The way his eyes followed her, the possessiveness, the jealousy whenever I so much as spoke to her, it all told a story he never admitted aloud. So why her, why now, and why me?
