• I was over the moon when I got the surprise job offer. I'd phoned Fiona Blake immediately and told her all about it. She was thrilled for me and asked me out to dinner to celebrate. I politely declined, of course. It was my good fortune; I have to treat her. I'd taken Fiona to a restaurant that evening.
• Over dinner, Fiona, being the veteran old pro, still dispensed advice to the new company. YZ Co. and such big companies had a bad culture of bullying newcomers, she warned. To gain a foothold, I'd be humiliated, smile at the entire office, and understand that such companies were battlegrounds. I should keep an eye out for plots and not trust everyone too readily. My head was spinning by dinner's end from all the cautionary tales.
