• Gareth Whitfield had not told me he loved me, not in so many words, but he'd returned to Bristol with me, and that was all the confirmation I, Dr. Eliza Morton (or just Eliza then), needed. He'd told me it was to see some great carving master—a lame excuse. I knew the truth churned beneath: he'd returned for me.
