• I of course did not turn down Edward Harrington's invitation. I knew that Edward had invited me to meet him for Clara's sake. Edward's attitude recently was on the other side, and Eleanor had begun to make peace with him. But Clara did not mention his opinion. I considered that Edward must have desired me to influence Clara.
• Edward had been waiting for me when I came in. He himself poured tea for me as soon as he spotted me coming in. I accepted the teacup and sipped. "Mr. Harrington, what can I do for you?"
