  • The words cut me deeper than any physical pain. "It's not my business who you want to punish, but don't cause trouble in my territory!" Edward's voice was a icy cut through the air. He was standing at the door in his black suit, his expression cold and aloof as he took in the destruction of the room—and of me.
  • My own vision, obscured by the assault, slowly improved, but the view of his face remained a queasy blur of unconcern. I would have been better left to the mercy of those ruffians than to have had him witness my humiliation. Nothing was discernible on the face of the detestable man who had harassed me other than a servile smile when he addressed Edward. "Mr. Harrington! Have I interrupted you?"
