• I came home to the usual welcome, but the moment I sat down, I could sense the tension from Vanessa and Imogen. I knew what they would ask. Vanessa did not delay. "I hear Clara is back?"
• I nodded brusquely, a simple "Yes, Clara is back," was all I could manage. Her sudden reappearance after three years of silence disturbed me. Years had passed, and yet I still carried the guilt for what had happened. Vanessa's eyes flashed ever so slightly narrower, that calculating look I knew so well.
