• I did not turn around until he was out of view. My body was sweaty. I was calm on the outside, but inside, I was trembling with fear. It was not right to use Carlos as a shield, but I had no choice. Edward had approached me, demanding answers, so I had no one but Carlos to use to protect myself. Carlos and I were talking about marriage at that point. My neighbors and his whole family knew me as his fiancée. Even the children thought I was his. Edward would find all of that out if he made inquiries, and he'd have no choice but to believe me.
