Chapter 4

  • Five years later…
  • San Francisco Airport…
  • A woman stepped out of the plane majestically. She wore a beautiful suit and her long brown hair was swept back to frame her face perfectly. Her lips were painted a dazzling red, with just a hint of pink at her chin to offset the contrast. She carried herself gracefully, her movements flowing with ease despite her elegant attire.
  • She had sunglasses on and exuded an air of authority as she made her way towards baggage claim. Once there, she took off her shades to glance around her with an air of superiority. She spotted a man in an expensive suit and walked up to him, greeting him by holding out one hand politely.
  • “Mr. Brown!” She smiled and they shook hands.
  • “Welcome back to San Francisco. How have you been?” He asked.
  • “I'm good, sir. Just one moment, I need to introduce you to my kids.” She smiled and pulled down her sunglasses, so he could see that she meant it with every fiber of her being.
  • “Mummy!” The triplets shouted at the same time as they ran to meet her.
  • Mr. Brown gushed at how cute the triplets were. They were two girls and a boy, and it was hard to tell their differences since they were wearing identical outfits. “Oh my goodness! What are your names?”
  • He laughed as they grabbed his hand in excitement.
  • “My name is Jenna,” The girl declared proudly, and this is “Elena and Jaden.”
  • “Awn, you're cute.” He complimented as they giggled and ran around him.
  • “Kids! What did I tell you about running?” She folded her arms.
  • They stopped abruptly. “Sorry, mum!” They said in unison and approached them.
  • “Kids, this is the Uncle Brown I've always told you about,” She announced.
  • “The one you said always buys us chocolates and would come visit soon?” Elena, the smartest of the triplets, said.
  • She nodded and they hugged him. He pecked their cheeks. “They're so adorable.”
  • Mr. Brown was the man who helped her get back to herself after the whole pregnancy scenario. He was her therapist and played a major role in her recovery and healing process. He wasn't very talkative or very expressive, but he was a great person and his heart was pure and good.
  • He wasn't able to see her kids since he returned to San Diego before she delivered, but she would forever remember his help.
  • Mr. Brown spent some time with the kids until Amber claimed her baggage before he left them, saying he was waiting for someone. They bade goodbye, and he pecked the kids before leaving again.
  • Amber looked up and saw someone holding a board with her name on it. “Let's go, kids.” She said as they headed to the place. Her eyes widened when she saw that Sophia was the one holding the board. Immediately Sophia saw her, she ran and engulfed her in a hug.
  • “I missed you so much,” She yelled with tears rolling down her cheeks.
  • “I missed you more.” Amber pecked her hair.
  • Sophia pulled away from the hug and faced the kids.
  • “Oh my gosh!” She hugged the triplets. “You all look even cuter in person. Do you remember me?” She asked.
  • “Yes, you're Aunty Sophia; the lady we always video call with.” Elena replied.
  • “Awn, aren't you smart.” She pecked her.
  • Sophia hugged Amber again. “Let's go home. Your new apartment is ready!”
  • “Damn, you're the best!” Amber exclaimed as they went to her car.

  • “That's not going to happen, mum. You can't continue setting up blind dates for me.” Xavier facepalmed.
  • “I will continue to do that because you have refused to get married. Xavier, you're fucking 30 years old, what else are you waiting for?” Mrs. De Vil snapped.
  • “I'll marry when I find the woman my heart yearns for.” He answered.
  • “This is the same excuse you've been giving me and your dad for 5 years now. You're our only son. Do you want us to die without grandchildren?” She asked.
  • “Mum, calm down. I promise you that I'll get married, but not now.”
  • “When I'm dead?” She burst into tears, knowing that was his weakness.
  • “Mum, stop. You know I don't like this.” He hugged her.
  • “Xavier, I love and want the best for you. I want you to get married and have children. I want to hold my grandchildren in my arms.” She whined.
  • “I'll get married soon, mum.” He cooed.
  • “I give you until the end of this month to show me the woman you wish to get married to. If that doesn't happen, then I'm giving you a wife myself.” She snapped and stormed out.
  • Xavier wondered if this was the same woman who was crying a few seconds ago. He sighed and took his phone, then placed a call.
  • “Any news?” He asked immediately the call went through.
  • “None yet, boss.” The answer came.
  • He sighed and hung up. He ruffled his hair, frustratingly. “Where are you?”

  • It was night and Amber had successfully tucked the kids to bed. She was happy to be back in San Francisco after being away in Canada. Sophia had gisted her about plenty of things, and she was glad to be back with her adorable babies.
  • Her phone beeped and she picked it up. She screamed when she opened her email and saw a letter from the company. She had applied for the position of a Personal Assistant. She had been accepted and was asked to come to work the next day.
  • Since she intended to return to San Francisco, she applied for a job in one of the largest companies here, THE DE VIL ENTERPRISES and did her interview through Skype since she was away, and now she had gotten the job. She couldn't contain her joy and sent a text message to Sophia immediately, telling her the good news.
  • The next morning, she dropped the children with Sophia and rushed to the company. They also sent her another mail that before she starts work that morning, they would have to check her and see if the information she gave them was authentic before she starts.
  • Amber admired the company as she got in, taking in everything.
  • “No wonder their pay was juicy.” She muttered to herself.
  • With her salary, she could pay bills, pay her children's fees, stock the house with groceries, do other things and still have little to save. That alone gladdened her heart as she made her way to the office.
  • After she got cleared, she was taken to the CEO's office and was asked to wait. They told her he was in a meeting and would be back soon.
  • She looked around the office and smiled. Things were really working in her favor. There were two tables in the office, the first one was the CEO's and the second one was probably for her.
  • “Mr. Xavier De Vil.” She smiled as she called the name written on a card placed on the desk.
  • A few minutes later, the door opened and Xavier entered.
  • “You must be the new Personal Assistant?” He asked the moment he saw her.
  • Amber turned with a smile. “Yes, Sir…” Her voice stopped in her throat when she recognized who she was standing with.
  • She blinked and stepped back. “No, it can't be,” She was horrified as she stared into the mesmerizing eyes of that stranger she had a one-night stand with. It was him. From his dressing, you would know he was the CEO of that company.
  • Realization dawned on her.
  • She was going to be his Personal Assistant!
  • Her past was back to haunt her.
