• Kaia watched the doctor’s lips move, but none of it made sense to her. It all felt like some sick joke Kai had orchestrated to make her stay. So as the doctor spoke, Kaia gave her a blank, unreadable expression.
• “Kaia, are you listening to what I’m saying?” the doctor’s voice pulled her out of her trance. Kaia simply looked at her, then shifted her gaze to Kai.
• “Is this another one of your schemes to blackmail me into staying with you?” Her tone was sharp, biting with venom.
