• “What the fuck do you mean your parents are in the guest room downstairs?” Kai whisper-yelled, glancing past Kaia’s shoulder toward the door of his room then realized how foolish that was, considering they were on the third floor.
• “Exactly what the hell I meant,” Kaia spat back. The anger from earlier that morning had reemerged, and this time, it threatened to drive her insane.
• Kai had returned home to find his girlfriend, Tiffany, lurking around. When he cornered her, she explained that she was organizing a birthday dinner for him and urged him to get ready. Just as he was about to leave, she called him back to let him know she'd invited a few last-minute guests, Kaia’s parents.
