• "Good night, Kara. Sleep as well as you can," Max said. Then he added something about someone being a fool— the red car driver, probably— but he sounded like Kyle.
• For the rest of that disturbed night, Kara tossed and turned on the other side of what seemed no thicker than a cardboard partition wall. She could hear Max tossing and turning too.
• She must have fallen asleep, but she dreamed that the door had opened and Max had come in. She opened her eyes - she wasn't dreaming. Doctor Max was standing in the doorway of her room, fully dressed, thrusting out his left hand and pointing at his wristwatch.
