• Alfred walked around the desk but didn't sit down. He was so tall that his head almost brushed the ceiling. His contemptuous eyes went first to Layla and then to Roy. Layla lifted her chin defiantly, but Roy blinked and looked sheepish.
• Alfred didn't bother to ask for any explanations. "You both lied to me," his eyes coldly accused, going to Layla. "You couldn't have gotten aboard without help, and it was Roy who gave it to you, as I suspected. You will both be put off this ship as soon as we get to Norius."
• "But that isn't fair," Layla protested.
