  • “Please, baby. Please don’t cry. I’m so sorry. She clung to him with her body still trembling as he rocked her back and forth in his arms. He wasn't sure if it was fear, upset, fury, or a mix of the three. He deserved whatever she threw at him. He had completely failed her. He had failed to defend her. He had not treated her with the care he had promised. All because he was attempting to ditch the truth and convince himself, for some idiotic reason, that he didn't love her.
  • It was such a lie. He did love her. She was his fix, his fixation, and the source of his deepest yearning. When another man touched something Mason believed to be his, he never before had such an intense, overwhelming possessiveness. He had not, however, treated her as though she were his. He had been treating her like an object. Not a woman he cared about, but a toy. He caressed her trembling back with his hands.
