Chapter 40

  • “I think I can relate, Mason. When my parents died, I was so angry with them. How stupid is that? It wasn’t their fault. They certainly didn’t intend to get themselves killed. They were the victims of an accident. And yet I was so angry with them for leaving me. I'm unsure what I would have done if Chris hadn't been there. He was my pillar. I'll always remember what he did for me.” Mason squeezed her to him.
  • He was aware of her struggles following the passing of her parents. Chris had given up on knowing how to assist her or what to do. She appeared unreachable because she was hurting and furious. Chris had been trying to get to her, take care of her, and give her love and support, which had driven him mad. Like a substitute father, Chris had raised her. Only he’d been everything to Lisa. Father, mother and brother. Protector, the sole source of support. Not many men would have done what he did, pushing everything to the side, any possibility of a family or relationship, in order to take sole responsibility for a younger sister.
  • Mason admired him for that. Lisa hesitated and then put a small distance between her and Mason, a fact he didn’t like, but he resisted the urge to anchor her more firmly against him. The action seemed too desperate, too needy. And he didn’t want to need anyone.
