Chapter 17

• “We’ll eat at Tisserie’s and then walk to the office,” he remarked, referring to a restaurant barely two streets away from his office building. She was hungry, and the day hadn’t even started yet. She was also jittery, tight, and apprehensive. Could she really pull it off? What will the other employees think of her on her first day at work? All of this kept replaying in her head. He stretched across the seat and curled his hand around hers, intertwining their fingers together, almost as if consoling her, as if he could feel the fear on her face. She turned to face him and smiled; her heart warmed by his gesture.
• “Here, that’s better,” he replied with a smile. “You appeared to be depressed. I can’t have everyone thinking you’d prefer to be anywhere else on your first day.”
• “I have a business dinner tonight,” Mason said. “I was hoping you’d come with me and make it bearable.”
