Chapter 22

• In the few stunned seconds it took for her brain to absorb what she had just heard, Lisa’s heart jackhammered against her chest, and she stood glued on the verge of a heart attack. If what she had just heard was accurate, she had little doubt Chris would listen to it soon; if he hadn’t already realized it. Fuck. Is it really so obvious? She realized that accepting his job as his secretary would draw attention, but she never expected Ross to be one of the first people who knew. What would she say now to justify herself?
• Whatever excuse she came up with wouldn’t change the reality that she had no business being his secretary. Not with her family’s financial resources to assist her in starting a business, or why did she only bring up the topic of a breakup a day after she started her employment at Remington Atlantic? She should have guessed that one did not have to be Sherlock to figure out something was fishy.
• “Nothing to say? Did you honestly think you did a good job hiding it? Come on, Lisa, what are you even doing with that guy? He clearly doesn’t love you for him to want to keep your relationship a secret.”
