Chapter 4
- No.” I shook my head. “That’s not possible! Werewolves aren’t real! They only exist in movies and books. There are no such things as werewolves! You’re lying to me!” I couldn’t stop my voice from rising in disbelief.
- I felt like I was losing my mind. This couldn’t be real. Was I dreaming again? Was this another vivid nightmare?
- “Listen Katie, we really don’t have much time. I didn’t kill your parents, but I know that you’ll be in grave danger if you don’t listen to me. The same person is trying to kill you too and they will succeed if you don’t come with me.”
- My brain was having a very hard time processing what he was saying. “What? No!” I yelled.
- Jace sighed like he was losing his patience. “Katie, you’re too weak to fight them. If you don’t come with me now, they will find you and kill you too!”
- I shook my head. This didn’t make any sense. I didn’t know him at all. Why would I trust him?
- “How do I know you’re not lying?” I countered. “Maybe you’re just trying to kidnap me so you could kill me too.”
- He growled impatiently. “If I wanted to kill you Katie’s, I would have already done so, kidnapping you would also be very easy for me, but I don’t want to do that to you. I need you to trust me and come by your own will.”
- His words were convincing but it would be dumb of me to just follow a stranger I met at my parents crime scene.
- “No, I’m not coming with you.” I decided. “I’m a cop, I’ll just report this to the station and they will investigate it and protect me.”
- Jace gave me a look of pity. “I’m sorry Katie, but I think it’s too late for that.” He said and I froze.
- “What do you mean—?” I didn’t get to finish my sentence before the sound of police sirens filled the air.
- “Oh thank God!” I exclaimed. “They’ve come for me!—“ I started to say but suddenly paused when a thought crossed my mind.
- “Wait, who called them?” I asked then I heard a voice blast over the police loudspeaker.
- “Kate Bradshaw! We have you surrounded! Please come out with your hands up or we will be forced to take drastic actions!”
- I froze in place. I knew that voice. It was Eloise! My best and only friend! She had come to arrest me?!
- “I repeat.” Eloise said again. “Kate Bradshaw, come out with your hands up! You are under arrest for the death of Officer Bruce and twenty other men. Please surrender or we would be forced to take drastic measures!”
- Tears of panic began pouring down my face. What was happening? What kind of horror nightmare was this? I had never killed anyone, at least I didn’t remember doing so.
- Jace grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him.
- “We have run out of time now. You have to make a choice. You either trust me or let them arrest you for murder. Do you really think you can prove your innocence to them? Do you think they can give you justice?”
- I thought about Officer Bruce’s corrupt politician of a father. There was no way in hell that he would allow me walk free if he believed that I killed his son. In fact, he would probably hire men to kill me before my case got to court.
- There was no justice in our station, and if I let them arrest me, there would be no justice for my parents either. The choice was simple.
- As if Jace read my mind, he took my hand in his. Trust me, I’m your only hope.” He said and I nodded.
- “Okay Jace, I will go with you, but how do we get through the police? You heard them, they have surrounded the house. No one can get through them.”
- Jace smiled at me. “No human can get through them, but you’re not a human, remember? You’re a werewolf and you have the ability to shift into a large wolf that has super abilities like super speed, unnatural strength and fast healing abilities. You are powerful enough to burst through their defenses. All you need to do is to shift into your werewolf form, and I can help you with that..”
- I frowned at him. I still didn’t know what he was talking about.
- “Ok, there’s a reason why I specifically came for you. You Katie are my fated mate and I’m your Alpha. I can command your Wolf to shift, but you need to trust me. Are you willing to trust me?” He asked and I nodded.
- “But wait, what’s a mate?” I asked and he smiled.
- “Don’t worry, you’ll soon learn. Now look into my eyes and give me your hands.” I obeyed him and looked into his eyes that began to glow again.
- “Katie, my mate, I command you to shift.” He said and it felt like my whole body caught fire at his words.
- I screamed and fell on the floor as my body contorted, my clothes tore and my bones cracked. It was painful and confusing but a part of my mind understood what was happening. I was shifting into a Wolf for the first time.
- When the pain passed, I got up and realized I was on four legs. I looked at Jace in panic and realized that he had also shifted.
- His Wolf form was taller than I was when I was standing in human form. His coat was a beautiful grey color and I was stunned. His Wolf was breathtaking.
- “Katie Bradshaw!” Eloise yelled. “You have left us no choice, we’re coming in!”
- I heard the sound of breaking wood and glass and realized that the cops were close. If they saw us now, they would definitely kill us.
- “It’s time to go!” Jace said and I almost fell. His mouth didn’t move but I heard his voice in my head.
- “How i
- Did you do that?!” I thought and he replied back.
- “In this form, we can talk with our thoughts through a mind link. I’ll explain later, it’s time to go.” He said and burst through the back door.
- I followed him and we burst through the groups of cops trying to stop us. Some got in their car and began to chase us. We were faster than them but we couldn’t run forever. They would eventually catch up when we got tired.
- “Follow me!” Jace linked and began to run to the forest. I tried to keep up but I was getting tired. The cops behind were quickly catching up to me.
- “Jace!” I screamed.
- “Just a little further Katie, keep running!”
- The cops behind me pulled out their guns and began to fire at me when we got to the edge of the forest. If we entered the forest, they wouldn’t be able to follow so they were trying to kill me now.
- The cops continued firing, and just when I thought I was going to get killed, a mighty black Wolf suddenly appeared in front of me. It was running at a high speed and I thought it was going to attack me.
- But to my surprise, it flew over my head and landed on the hood of the police car, forcing them to stop and come out running for their lives.
- After the cops ran away, the mighty black Wolf turned to me and uttered one word.
- “Mate.”
