- “I-I thought Joseph was Macy’s son?” Bert asked, clearly confused. He didn’t know what to feel—he had always believed Macy was the boy’s mother because that was what Sheila had told him.
- Vangie shook her head. She drew in a long, shaky breath. “No, Bert. I-I’m sorry.” Tears were already welling up in her eyes. “When… when I left—when I was already in Canada—I found out I was almost three months pregnant,” she confessed as the tears began to fall freely.
