• Marica: Ma, you should schedule your medical appointment. I’ll send you the hospital’s contact number so you can call them. We’ll send the money for the fee the day after tomorrow.
• Vangie almost held her breath as she read her daughter’s message. She bit her lip and stared outside her store. What should I do? she asked herself. She hadn’t told Bert yet about her plans to process her papers. She’d tried several times, but every time she was about to speak, her words got stuck. She didn’t know how to tell him without hurting him — or making him upset.
• She hadn’t expected Bert to come into her life. She had been content just running her little store and waiting for her children. Her plan to follow them to Canada was still firm. But now… part of her didn’t want to leave Bert. She sighed, pressing a hand to her forehead.
